Still more on distros OK, so finally I got everything done for the Beagle/Dashboard technology demonstration. All I can say is...WHAT a PAIN! Originally, I was trying to put it into Novell Linux Desktop 9...but the development enviornment on that machine was iffy (pkg-config kept making defunct processes when I tried to compile dashboard). So, I went to Fedora Core 3. For the most part, everything went smooth, until I realized Fedora is behind the times on Evolution - it only has Evo 2.0.x, while I needed 2.2.x for the evolution-sharp bindings required for beagle/dashboard. So, there was a major fight in getting evolution 2.2 working properly compiled from source. Then, Beagle wasn't indexing the contents of my Office .doc files properly - had to go on IRC to get a solution to that - turns out there's a dependency that's not mentioned in the Beagle Wiki build instructions - got that built, and finally things are working relatively normally. All that remains is to get some good data into the machine for beagle to index. | | Wednesday, April 13th, 2005 | | 5:54 pm |
Linux Distros SUCK! Well, as I try to build a demo for a couple of up-and-coming Linux projects (Beagle and Dashboard, both part of the GNOME project), I'm finding one thing that drives me absolutely BATTY - Distributions suck when you need to have anything that they don't already have a package for!!! Almost every Linux distro out there does NOT include an adequate development enviornment, even when you select the "Development" option - pkgconfig .pc files are commonly missing. And, to install anything outside the package manager is a massive feat of engineering anyway. This is one of the biggest reasons I like using Gentoo or LFS - knowing that this stuff is around and useable.
Beagle and Dashboard, however, are looking like really interesting projects...Beagle is a search tool...it indexes things in the background, so when you actually want to search, things come up instantly. Also, it uses the inotify function of the Linux kernel, so anytime a new file is created, or an existing file altered, the background daemon is alerted and can update the index. Dashboard works with other programs to display information according to what you're currently doing now. For example, if I open an IM session in GAIM with one of my roommates, Dashboard will, for example, display the address book information from Evolution. Or, if I'm in the LFS IRC talking about a certain bugzilla bug, Dashboard can give me information about that bug. It's really a nice concept, but still highly in development, so it's pretty raw.
Talk later, it's almost time for me to go home! | | Tuesday, March 15th, 2005 | | 10:04 am |
Bah Humbug - Birthday Blues Well, today marks the 33rd anniversary of a day that shall live in infamy - the date of my birth! Yes, on March 15, 1972, this humble geekazoid was born in a small hospital in a small town in Kansas. 33 years later, that geekazoid is still trying to determine exactly who and what he is. LOL, ok, so maybe it's not all that bad, but still...another birthday as a single geek - when will they end? Becca, of all people, popped off with an IM of birthday wishes...it was a nice gesture, but even after all these years, hearing from her still feels like a knife thru my heart. I haven't heard from Michelle in a few weeks, so that makes me feel all the more lonely - maybe I should try to contact her, or maybe I should just say hell with it. I just don't know. Friday night I ran into an old friend on the ferry home. I haven't seen her since just before I moved to PA, so she was, needless to say, surprised to see me standing there in the ferry terminal, considering she had no idea I was back. Hopefully, her and I will be going to dinner Saturday night to celebrate my birthday. Anyway, talk later! Current Mood: crappy | | Sunday, March 6th, 2005 | | 5:02 pm |
It's Sunday So, here I am, enjoying a weekend before going back to work on Monday. But, it surely is nice to be able to look forward to going to work - I think I'm going to really and truly enjoy my new job! Anything is better than working the phones, ya know :)
Other than that, not much happening. Got a text message from Michelle a few days ago, something is going on there, but I don't know what, and that worries me a little. Oh well, I'm sure she'll tell me when the time is right. | | Thursday, February 24th, 2005 | | 11:20 pm |
One step closer to working! Well, it's been a tiring day. I had to go over to Redmond today to do the paperwork on my new assignment at Microsoft. All went well, of course, and I start a week from today, at 10am. I'm so excited! It'll be nice to get back to work. I got to talk to Michelle again last night, which was wonderful - told her about the new job, she was happy for me. Her parents are back to their usual stuff again - trying to get her to come back and live with them, because they need her to help them out...but once they're done with her helping them out, they'll just make her leave again. I definately can't wait till I can get her out to Seattle - but I gotta get myself into a place of my own first.
In other news, I installed Ubuntu Linux on my laptop last night - been playing a little with it...I'm not too impressed with it, tho. Debian-based distributions drive me insanely batty LOL. Slack, Gentoo, and of course, LFS are my Linuxes of choice, always have been. I can, however, appreciate the attractiveness of Fedora, or the user-friendliness of Mandrake - they're just not for a hard-core Linux hacker like myself. | | Friday, February 18th, 2005 | | 9:38 pm |
Double W00t! So, earlier this afternoon Chad called from Volt in Redmond. I got the position!!!!! I don't know what the pay rate will be, but it's gotta be better than what I'm making on unemployment. From what he told me, I'll be starting March 4th, so I get a couple more weeks to relax before I get back out there and at it. Got so much to do now that I'm working again - get some bills paid off, get the car fixed. But, at least now I can do it!
YAY! | | 12:17 am |
W00t!!!! Well, I had my interview this afternoon, and I think it went very well! By the time my bus made it back to Seattle, the recruiter from Volt had already called to tell me that Bill (the hiring manager at MS) had asked him to check my references, and assuming those all came back ok, they would probably be in touch with me with an offer. I really hope I get this, it's like a dream job for me! Current Mood: hyper | | Wednesday, February 16th, 2005 | | 7:18 pm |
Bleh! So here it's Wednesday...Volt called today, and my interview at MS that was supposed to be at 11:30am tomorrow has been pushed to 1pm at the Redmond campus, building 50. Wish me luck all! Unemployment check came today....and it's gone immediately - such is life. I hope I get this job - it may only be a one year contract position, but it's better than being completely out of work like I am right now, and I think it's something I'll enjoy doing. Beyond that, not too much else happening. Got to talk to Michelle for a little while yesterday, she's doing ok...but having trouble with her eyes - the doc thinks it's glaucoma, and she may end up going blind...not if *I* can help it. Hopefully someday soon I can get her out here, we can finally get married like we've talked about for years, and her and Kylie can have a better life...but I have to get things straightened out with me first. | | Tuesday, February 15th, 2005 | | 10:26 pm |
He's Back! OK..well...it's been well over a year since I wrote in this thing...I'm absolutley terrible about it, for those who don't notice. Not a lot to say right now...I'm out of work (my contract at MS ended on Nov 16th), and I haven't been too lucky at finding something else so far. I do have an interview with Microsoft Thursday for a position, and hopefully it'll work out for me. I've also decided that I need a break from the LFS project that I've been involved with for many years now - the stress of being out of work, and so many other things happening with me was just getting to be too much. V-Day sucked - terrible when the woman you love is clear on the other side of the country...but that's life.
Anyway, Maybe I'll get to be a little better about updating this thing. C'ya! |
